The Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina) are exclusively North American box turtles. They’re found in the eastern United States, ranging from southern Maine to Florida along the East Coast, and west to Michigan, Illinois, eastern Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Terrapene carolina inhabits open woodlands, pastures, and marshy meadows. They are generally omnivorous, and prefer green vegetation, mushrooms, snails, earthworms and grasshoppers. It is often found near streams and ponds. The turtles are 4.5 inches in length and weigh 1-2 pounds. The females are larger than males. Box turtles can live to be twenty-five years or even older.
